Things have moved from the realm of the possible to the impossible. In other words the impossible is possible. A business woman named Eva Ottoson is about to become the first woman on earth to lend her womb for conception purposes to her daughter who was born without reproductive organs. Her daughter Sara is 25 while she is 56. They have discussed it and since both mother and daughter are rational and “consider a womb a womb” they are willing to go ahead with the procedure.
The conception is set for next year and if it is successful it would paradoxically mean that Sara’s baby will be conceived in the same womb in which she herself was conceived. Her mother who happens to be Swedish has said that “she needs it more than me.” The operation will occur in Sweden, one of the most secular and liberal societies on earth. A biology teacher, Sara says that an organ is just an organ. But her mother did consider it to be a little weird.
However, the daughter is worried about the mother’s health since she will be operated upon. She was born in Sweden and has a disease in which the person who has it has no reproductive organs. As for the procedure, it has occurred before although not between a mother and a daughter. In Saudi Arabia in 2000 a 26 year old woman received a womb from a 46 year old donor. However it didn’t work out as planned since the recipient developed complications.
In order to avoid complications the baby is delivered by Caesarian Section. All precautions are taken to ensure that the donor’s womb is not rejected by the body tissues of the recipient. This operation if successful will be a first for reproductive technology. Science has rolled back the frontiers of what could be done and what couldn’t. The possibilities are truly infinite.
